Health and Long-Term Care Insurance

Whether you have statutory or private insurance: gaps in health and long-term care cover can be closed in a targeted manner. We advise you on the options that suit your status.

Supplementary insurance for persons with statutory insurance

Statutory health insurance covers medically necessary basic care. Anyone wishing to receive benefits beyond this can supplement them with private supplementary insurance – for example for dentures and dental treatment, hospital stays in a single or double room with treatment by the chief physician, alternative practitioners, glasses or travel abroad.

With supplementary dental insurance in particular, reimbursement rates, waiting periods and benefit limits in the first few years differ considerably. We compare these points for you.

Private comprehensive health insurance

Whether a switch to private comprehensive health insurance is possible depends on your status – for example as a self-employed person, as a civil servant or as an employee with an income above the compulsory insurance threshold. The decision is a long-term one and should be carefully considered, as a return to statutory health insurance is only possible to a limited extent.

Together with you, we consider not only today's premium but also the development of premiums in old age, the scope of benefits, family planning and the consequences for dependants who would be co-insured free of charge under statutory family insurance.

Long-term care: an often underestimated gap

Statutory long-term care insurance is designed as partial cover. Depending on the care grade – there are five care grades – it pays fixed amounts that often do not cover the actual costs of care at home or in a care facility. The remainder is borne by the persons in need of care themselves and, in some circumstances, by their relatives.

Private supplementary long-term care insurance, for example in the form of a daily care allowance, closes this gap in full or in part. The earlier the policy is taken out, the lower the premium and the simpler the health assessment, as a rule.

Daily sickness allowance and daily hospital allowance

In the case of prolonged incapacity for work, the employer's payment of wages ends for employees after the period of continued remuneration; the sickness benefit of statutory health insurance is below the previous net income. Self-employed persons are often affected even more directly by a loss of income.

A private daily sickness allowance compensates for this difference. Together with you, we determine the amount that matches your ongoing commitments and the point in time from which the benefit is to begin.

Frequently asked questions

As a person with statutory insurance, can I cover individual additional benefits privately?

Yes. Supplementary insurance policies can be taken out individually, for example only for dentures or only for hospital stays.

What is a daily care allowance?

An agreed daily rate that the insurer pays out depending on the care grade. You are free to use it as you wish, regardless of who provides the care.

Can I return from private health insurance to statutory health insurance at any time?

No. A return is only possible under certain statutory conditions and is largely excluded above a certain age. The decision in favour of private comprehensive insurance should therefore be examined carefully.

Why should I take out supplementary long-term care insurance early?

Because the premium increases with the age at entry, and with increasing age a health assessment more frequently leads to surcharges or rejections.
